Scotland talisman Shaun Maloney is facing at least three weeks on the sidelines after returning to Chicago Fire with a back injury.
The 32-year-old, who netted his fourth goal of the Euro 2016 qualification campaign in the recent 1-1 draw with Ireland, will see a specialist this week to assess the full extent of the complaint.
He is expected to be absent until at least mid-July – however manager Frank Yallop fears he could be in line for a longer lay-off.
Contrary to his purple patch on the international stage, Maloney has scored just once in 10 appearances for the Fire since making the switch from Wigan Athletic to the MLS in January.
Chicago are currently toiling at the foot of the 10-team Eastern Conference as the former Celtic and Aston Villa star endures a testing maiden campaign Stateside.
