St Andrews ranked top university in Scotland and third in UK

THE UNIVERSITY of St Andrews has been ranked top in Scotland and the third best in the UK, according to a new league table.

The historic university was the only Scottish institution in the top 15 of the 119 universities ranked by The Guardian.

Universities were ranked according to spending per student, the student/staff ratio, graduate career prospects, what grades applicants need to get a place, and how satisfied final-year students are with their courses.

St Andrews academic schools performed strongly, with four courses – Computer Science, Geography, International Relations and Divinity – being ranked top in the UK.

Chemistry, History, Philosophy and Art History all secured second place while Physics, English and Earth and Marine Science were ranked third.

Management, Classics and Mathematics were all ranked in the UK top 5, and Biosciences, Medicine, Modern Languages and Psychology were placed in the top ten.

The Guardian Guide is the third recent major league table in which the University of St Andrews has performed strongly.

Last week the prestigious Leiden Ranking 2015 placed the University 45th in the world in a comprehensive survey of 750 major universities worldwide.

Last month the University was named best in Scotland and 5th in the UK in The Complete University Guide 2016.
