MSP calls for fire sprinkler systems for buildings across Scotland

An MSP has called for the installation of fire sprinkler systems in buildings across Scotland.

David Stewart, who represents the Highlands and Islands, said he wants to see a focus on higher risk properties such as those with multiple occupants and social housing.

The comments from the Scottish Labour parliamentarian come ahead of a debate on the Scottish Fire Sprinkler Coordination Group.

Mr Stewart said: “It is clear from the evidence that fire sprinklers can save lives, and if targeted well can help protect the most vulnerable people in our society.

“Fire sprinklers are a highly cost-effective way of reducing the UK’s appalling fire death toll.”

He continued: “There are numerous examples here in the Highlands of situations where a fire sprinkler system could have saved properties from extensive fire damage, most recently the serious fire in Academy Street, Inverness and likewise the backpackers hostel on the High Street where it was simply luck that no one was killed or injured.”

Mr Stewart added: “I will continue to seek an extension of fire sprinkler systems to all new Social Housing and HMO properties to ensure that no lives are lost needlessly.”
