Trump’s big sister gives £158K to island nursing home

DONALD Trump’s big sister has donated $250,000 (£158,000) to a small care home in the Western Isles.

Maryanne Trump Barry, a Senior appeal Judge in the US, made the huge donation in memory of her mother, Maryann Macleod Trump, who came from the Isle of Lewis.

The cash from the 78-year-old will help secure nine new beds at Bethesda Care Home in Stornoway.

The community-run home, which heavily depends on fundraising and grants, provides accommodation for the island’s elderly.

Carol Somerville, manager of the care home, said: “She wanted to make a donation. She didn’t want any glory, it was in loving memory of her mother.

“She still has relatives in Tong. It was them that said [to make a donation to] Bethesda.”

Mrs Somerville said the care home had “fought hard” to secure public funding for more beds.

The Scottish Government has also provided £200,000 to contribute towards the capital costs.

She added: “We are delighted to have worked alongside Maryanne Trump Barry in order to make a lasting memorial to her mother.”

Councillor Uisdean Robertson added: “This is good news for older people and their families, in providing more bed spaces which will help address the delayed discharge waiting list.”

Mrs Trump, who died in 2000, aged 88, was born in the small village of Tong, 10 miles from the town of Stornoway.

On a holiday to New York 1930 she met and married local builder Fred Trump and had five children including the business magnate Donald Trump, now 68.

Donald Trump made his second ever visit to the Western Isles in 2008 having previously only been there as a child.

His big sister, however, has stayed close to the Scottish island and is reported to have visited dozens of times.

Maryanne has enjoyed an illustrious career since she was nominated by President Ronald Reagan in 1983 to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.

Donald Trump yesterday (Thu) praised his big sister for her generosity.

He said: “Maryanne is a very successful federal judge at the court of appeals level, she is highly respected and a product of Scotland.

“Her donation is incredibly kind and an example of her generous spirit. I have always admired her dedication and willingness to help people who need it the most.”

The billionaire business magnate added: “My sister and the entire Trump family loves Scotland and the area in which my mother was born.

“She goes back to the Isle of Lewis often and my mother went every year during her lifetime, taking her daughters with her.”
