A HIGHLAND tourist sign that notoriously listed a derelict abattoir as a top attraction has finally been replaced.
The brown sign in Dornoch, north of Inverness, gained notoriety after Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin tweeted a photo of it.
It listed toilets, doctor, museum and an abattoir as must-see places, despite the town boasting a cathedral and the Royal Dornoch championship golf course.
Local were dismayed that the abattoir was included and pointed it was in the process of being knocked down.
Early this year the Highland Council announced it was looking into the “current status and accuracy of the sign in question”.
Now it has emerged they have replaced it with brand new one, much to the “outrage” of Ian Rankin.
The more traditional tourist information sign now points the way to a beach, the golf course and places to eat and drink.
The Inspector Rebus writer retweeted a photo of the new sign posted by Cromarty Cheese which said: “The power of twitter – Dornoch now has new signs! (And no abattoir)”
The author added “outrage!”
When the brown abattoir sign was posted on social media earlier this year it caused a stir.
Stephen Foster asked on twitter: “Sweeney Todd lives anywhere nearby?”
Malcolm Ramsay added:“A trip to Dornoch? It’s kill or cure.”
The slaughterhouse itself had been a sore point for locals in the area for years.
Gavin Sutherland of Gavin’s Traditional Butchers based in the nearby retail park said: “It’s been knocked to the ground.”
He added: “It’s been derelict for four or five years.”
