Scottish Cancer Foundation offers £10K prize to person who has done most to battle the disease

A CHARITY is offering a prize of up to £10,000 to the person who has made the most significant contribution to reducing the burden of cancer in Scotland.

The Scottish Cancer Foundation is inviting nominations for the 2015 prize which is designed to recognise excellence in areas such as cancer prevention, research, treatment or policy.

Applicants do not need to be health professionals but must be living and working in Scotland.

Great progress has been made in the fight against cancer, says the charity, and the award is aimed at encouraging that process

Professor Bob Steele, foundation chairman and professor of surgery at Dundee University, said: “There have been many improvements to cancer care in Scotland in recent years and we have set up this award to celebrate the progress that is being made.

“We hope it also helps to encourage further work in improving the understanding of cancer in Scotland and promoting steps to prevent it.”

The winner will also receive the Evans/Forrest medal in recognition of the founders of the Scottish Cancer Foundation, Professor John Evans and Professor Sir Patrick Forrest.

The prize will be awarded at a ceremony later this year. The Foundation said it was grateful for the financial support received by the Grant Simpson Trust in making the award.

Nominations are being invited through the Foundation’s website http://www.scottishcancerfoundation.co.uk with applicants being asked to write a short account of how the prize money will be used to further their work on cancer.
