Ayrshire gallery to showcase at Glasgow Contemporary Art Fair

An Ayrshire gallery will be showcasing at this month’s inaugural Glasgow Contemporary Art Fair held at the city’s iconic Old Fruitmarket.

Artist Margaret Johnston, who runs Ailsa Gallery in Ayr, will be exhibiting at the event, along with work by fellow Ayrshire based painters including Claire Harrigan, Bridget Hunter, David Reid, Keith Salmon, Alison Thomas and Irene Walker.

Essex born Keith Salmon, who is visually impaired, moved to Irvine in 1998 and the move north proved pivotal in being able to marry the two main passions of his life, namely painting and hill-walking.

He said: “I’ve painted all my life but, like many artists, travelled around and had to work part-time to pay the bills.

“After I moved north, I was lucky enough to obtain a studio space at the Courtyard Studios on the harbourside and since then I’ve been very active with my painting.

“I suppose a watershed moment came in 2001, while walking on Rannoch Moor with my partner Anita, when I experienced the classic Scottish ‘four seasons in one hour’ scenario which was so inspiring and really was the starting point for me to combine my two interests and from that point my work has been based on the walks I undertake.”

The GCAF takes place between Friday 24th and Sunday 26th April.

Opening times are: Friday 24th April 6 pm – 9 pm; Saturday 25th April 9.30 am – 5.30 pm; Sunday 26th April 10 am – 5 pm.
