Edinburgh International Festival has announced the winner of its competition for a photographer.
Alex Aitchison will be given £3500 to capture reportage style images of this year’s festival, which has a line-up that includes Juliette Binoche, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Volksbuhne Berlin, and Max Richter.
The 22 year old from Edinburgh won first place in the competition, which had over 100 entrants.
Alex was required to submit a portfolio of images and was one of two photographers shortlisted.
He then had to prove himself by shooting images at the event’s launch day last week, producing 12 superb stills to prove his abilities.
The competition was run jointly with the Morton Charitable Trust, in order to promote a new or emerging photographer based in Scotland.
Alex is a recent graduate of Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, where he received a 1stClass Honours Degree in Visual Communication,.
He was also nominated for a BP Design Award in 2014.
He said, ‘I’m incredibly excited to be taking on the position in such an exciting year for the festival.
“ I’m lucky to follow so many talented photographers and hope to be able to tell the story of the performers, crew and EIF staff in a way that will be a happy reminder for them in years to come.’
Douglas Connell, a Trustee of The Morton Charitable Trust said: “The selection of the seventh Festival photographer demonstrates the great success of our collaboration in encouraging new photography talent.
“We are enormously appreciative of the opportunity given to these photographers.”
