Is this the face of Alex Salmond, photographed in the rocks above a Scottish beach?

IS this the face of Alex Salmond gazing out over the North Sea?

A snap of an unusual rock formation above a Scottish beach appears to capture something of the likeness of the former First Minister.

The picture was taken in the coastal village of Gardenstown – just 20 miles from Salmond’s former Banff and Buchan constituency office in Peterhead.

The face in the cliff – complete with heavy jowls and bushy eyebrows – looks out towards the North Sea wind farms and oil rigs so central to SNP policy.

The face in the cliff has been known to locals for the past three decades – going back to the time the future First Minister was working as an oil economist.

The picture was taken by local community councillor Ron Beaty, who said the face has been “growing on him” over the years.

Cllr Beaty himself thinks the face looks like a troll – and not of the cybernat variety.

“I have probably passed that face most days for the last 30 years,” he said. “This time the light hit it just the right way and I decided to take a photo of it.

“It’s growing on me, though I have yet to give it a name. I think quite a few people notice it when they walk past.”

Scottish Conservative MSP Alex Johnstone said: “To paraphrase one of Alex Salmond’s favourite quotes, this is evidence that rocks have already started to melt under the sun.”

An SNP spokesman said: “For people in the north-east, choosing between the Tories, Lib Dems and Labour is being stuck between a rock and a hard place – by voting for a strong team of SNP MPs, we can make sure that Scotland’s voice is heard and rock the Westminster establishment.”
