Tweed-clad gang leave man with broken arm following early morning assault

A MAN suffered a broken arm and facial injuries after he was attacked by a gang of up to a dozen men, some of them wearing tweed jackets.

The attack in the early hours of Sunday morning happened in the Cowgate, Edinburgh.

The 33-year-old victim was struck from behind in the attack at 2.30am, after which he was taken to hospital for treatment.

The attackers – who numbered between six and 12 – were described as in their late 20s.

Most of them described as wearing tweed jackets or suits, shirts, ties and brogues.

Detective Sergeant Neil Spowart said: “This appears to have been an unprovoked assault which left the victim needing hospital treatment.

“We are appealing for anyone who was in the area of the Cowgate around 2.30am on Sunday morning.

“The group of suspects have been described as wearing distinctive tweed jackets, and so we hope this description will assist in jogging people’s memories, particularly if they have information on which pub or bar they were in beforehand.”

Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
