VIDEO: 1,000 volunteers test safety of Edinburgh’s trams in ‘Exercise Salvador’

AROUND one thousand eager travellers took up an invitation to be among the first passengers on Edinburgh’s controversial new tram system.

The volunteers turned out at the new tram stop beside Murrayfield Stadium last week to help transport chiefs test safety and crowd control procedures.

The Murrayfield stop is one of the biggest along the new route, which runs from Edinburgh Airport to  the city centre.

It will have to cope with massive crowds when the stadium hosts international rugby matches or major concerts, such as the highly anticipated One Direction gig coming up in June.

Dubbed ‘Exercise Salvador’ the morning event saw the travellers flock to the station, before boarding a tram for a short journey.

The tram line, which has been dogged by delays and a massive overspending controversy, is due to start carrying paying passengers from May.
