EDINBURGH experienced tram mania yesterday as the vehicles rolled through the city centre in daylight for the first time.
Since construction began in 2007 the trams project has been plagued by delays and cost overruns.
Until now the trams have been tested only at night or on a stretch of the 8.7mile track outside the city centre.
But today the director of Edinburgh’s trams himself tweeted a driver’s eye picture from a tram approaching Princes Street.
Tom Norris Tweeted “On street #tramspotting”, posting a picture from inside the vehicle as it rolled down Shandwick Place.
In another picture from St Andrews Square, he said: “Return journey.”
Locals expressed their shock at the sight.
Susan Brougham Tweeted: “Just saw an actual tram on Princes Street. About fell over with the shock.”
Kate Donald Tweeted: “tram on princes street in daylight hours!”
Even the council’s transport chief Lesley Hinds seemed surprised, saying: “Tram out in Edinburgh during the day! Spotted from my window. Staff all excited!”.
She posted a picture of council staff crowding around a window to see the vehicle.
