New Year revellers thrill crowds below with YMCA dance routine

A VIDEO of four cheeky New Year revellers doing the YMCA from the windows of a flat in Edinburgh has gone viral in less than 24 hours.

People celebrating on the Royal Mile were shocked to look up and see four shirtless men performing the smash hit by the Village People as lights in the flat go on and off in time to the music.

Timed in almost perfect sequence, the anonymous men are lit up in all their glory by well timed lighting from inside the building – thought to be controlled by an iPad.

The link, posted by Maria McMillan from Musselburgh, East Lothian, has received more than “6,000” likes on Facebook and has been shared over 2,000 times.

Spurred on by whistles and shouts of support from watchers below, what appeared to be four men bravely performed the well-known YMCA dance routine from a flat on one of Edinburgh’s most famous roads.

Masonite Andreucci, who owns the Clam She’ll chip shop beneath the party flat, said the crowds were loving the show.

He said: “You should have seen the crowds. They were absolutely loving it.

“They put the speakers on the window ledge and started their routine but then stopped.

“Everyone was screaming and waiting for more so they started again.”

He added: “I know that one of the guys that did it is a doctor. He bought the flat at the beginning of summer.

“It was three guys and a girl taking part. They’re really nice guys, come in here all the time. It was brilliant.”

In the video, which is just over a minute long, watchers can be heard discussing how the unsuspecting neighbours above the second floor flat are not bothered by the spectacle below.

A woman’s voice said: “Look at ones above it having like a dinner and not really caring.”

They also had a theory as to how the men timed the lighting behind their video.

She said: “It’s a posh flat, they must have like an iPad setting.”

Several people can be seen filming the performance while one happy-go-lucky man starts performing the same routine on the street.

Commenting on the video’s Facebook link, one user, Craig Robertson said: “This is sheer brilliance!”

Chris Dalziel wrote: “Actually brilliant. So proud xx”

And Marian Naan added: “Haha actually brilliant! Gutted I missed this.”
