A Scottish pub is hoping the luck of the Irish is with them when it attempts to break two UK records to mark this year’s St Patrick’s Day.
The Three Sisters in Edinburgh’s Cowgate is hoping to sell more than 13,200 pints of Guinness and 6,600 pints of Magners to smash two UK records this Sunday.
The pub is opening its doors at 7am and is also drafting Irish celebrities Shane Lynch from Boyzone, Comedy Hip-Hop duo The Rubberbandits and Catchphrase presenter, Roy Walker, to help in the mammoth task to shift the 150 kegs of Guinness and 75 kegs of Magners.
Donal Hurrell, General Manager at The Three Sisters, said: “Edinburgh is one of the best places to celebrate St Patrick’s Day outside of Ireland, so I’m confident we can easily beat the UK records. The Cowgate itself was previously known as Edinburgh’s “Little Ireland”, and we certainly think it will be turned into a little Ireland again on Sunday.
“We plan to keep the crowds entertained the entire weekend with Irish dancers, folk singers, food and films so there will be plenty of opportunity to enjoy the craic.
“I also expect this year to be even busier than ever, especially with the celebrity guests we have lined up. Having Shane Lynch and Roy Walker at The Three Sisters will really make the weekend that extra bit special and the atmosphere will be fantastic.
The current record for the most pints of Guinness sold stands at just over 10,000 and this was achieved by The Three Sisters at last year’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations.
However, with the pub expecting more than 900 people at one time, it is highly confident it can sell enough pints to break the UK records.
Donal added: “We are extremely well prepared here with hundreds of kegs at the ready for all of our customers. All the staff are really excited too for the celebrations to kick-off on Friday and the record attempt to begin on Sunday. It will be a fantastic weekend of comedy, craic and live music for everyone involved.”
The St Patrick’s Day celebrations begin on Friday night with live music and entertainment from Roy Walker throughout the evening. Saturday’s entertainment features a live screening of the Ireland v Italy Six Nations game.
St Patrick’s Day on Sunday kicks off with a breakfast buffet, coverage of the GAA Club Finals and old Irish films being screened throughout the pub. At 5pm Irish Dancers will continue the celebrations outside before welcoming The Rubberbandits and Boyzone’s Shane Lynch who is to play his own DJ set to bring the weekend to a close.
Accommodation is also on offer at the venue’s adjoining Central Hotel with high demand already for their new deluxe dorm rooms.
The “Superdorms” can sleep up to nine people making it perfect for the ultimate boys’ or girls’ weekend away in the capital who want to celebrate the Irish holiday in style. Included in the rooms is a free standing SMEG fridge stocked full of wine and beer, a table tennis, a darts board and TV’s built into each headboard of the beds.
There is even a “recovery trolley” for any late night partiers wanting a hangover cure, with bacon rolls and pints for that ‘hair of the dog’ kick-start to the day, delivered straight to your door.
