SCOTS comedian Greg Hemphill has stepped in to help fans left high and dry by the collapse of HMV.
The 42-year-old offered to send out Still Game box sets to anyone left with useless gift vouchers from the fallen chain.
He offered the DVDs to the first 20 fans that tweeted him pictures of their “useless” gift certificates.
Kind-hearted Hemphill told his 50,000 followers this morning: “Send me your HMV gift certificate, I will send you a Still Game box set. I can’t offer you HMV’s range, but we can offer them the finger.
“I’m good for about 20 of the useless f****** things (gift certificates.),” he added.
After receiving a few joke responses, Hemphill insisted his offer was genuine.
He wrote: “I’ll follow the first twenty folk who are treating my offer seriously and they can DM me their address.”
His generous gesture was re-tweeted 140 times by fans with many followers keen to take him up on his deal.
One fan, called Ideal Cynic tweeted the comedian a snap of his gift card, pleading: “£30 doon the swanny. Only Jack & Victor could quell the rage in my heart :-)”
Another fan, Steven Tobin, wrote #hookmeupGreg and posted a picture of his defunct gift card.
Ryan O’Donnell, added: “Fair play Greg, that’s a very decent gesture.”
Following his thoughtful offer, Hemphill’s name was trending on Twitter.
Danny Phillips commended the TV star for his actions, writing: “What a top bloke giving away box sets to fans of one of my fav Scottish comedies! Well worth a follow ya bawbag.”
One follower suggested Hemphill could encourage other celebrities to get in on the act.
Bib Boab, wrote: “Why not ask some of your celebrity buddies to do the same thing? Make a few folk feel a bit better”
But Hemphill said: “It’s not for me to do.
“It’s a good thought. If other folk want to join in that’s cool.”
HMV called in the administrators yesterday (Mon), putting hundreds of jobs in Scotland, and 4000 across the UK, under threat.
HMV, which opened 92 years ago, has 22 stores north of the Border including in Buchanan Street, Glasgow, Edinburgh’s Princes Street and some of the country’s busiest shopping centres. In total, it has 240 stores in the UK and Ireland.
Accountant Deloitte has been appointed administrator after the firm failed to persuade suppliers to pay £300 million to help it pay off its bank debt and fund an overhaul of the company’s business model.
Trading in HMV shares on the London Stock Exchange were also suspended last night.
