Scottish Olympian fights back at Twitter troll

SCOTS Olympian Lynsey Sharp has hit back at a Twitter troll who said she should lose her funding and called her performance “pathetic”.

Sharp missed out on the finals of the women’s 800m after a seventh-place finish in the semi-finals last night (thur).

The 22-year-old’s selection for the squad was controversial as she was chosen over three women who achieved the Olympic A standard.

But after she lost to Kenyan Pamela Jemino, a Twitter user called Phil Allen from Wirral, bombarded her with Tweets, saying she should apologise to the athletes she was chosen over.

He Tweeted at her: “You cost three girls their Olympic place, that performance was pitiful!”

He also said: “Lynsey Sharp that was a joke I hope you lose your funding you cost three girls their Olympic dream” and “Pathetic from Lyndsey Sharp why klnock back 3 A grade performers for her?”

Even though Sharp Tweeted about her disappointment over her performance, he said: “No excuse, you cost three girls their Olympic place. You should not have accepted a place when you only had B standard times.”

The Twitter user, who describes himself as a “huge sport fan” and supporter of Tranmere Rovers FC and St Helens rugby, later removed some of his Tweets.

But Sharp batted away his taunts, saying last night: “@PhilAllen1980 thank you for the one negative tweet of the day #yawn”.

She later thanked her fans for their support, Tweeting this morning:

“Blown away by the nice tweets uv sent me! Was gd to get out for a run this morning and clear my head.

“Im an Olympic semi-finalist…not bad!”

Sharp threw herself to the ground and buried her face in her hands after the race, and later gave interviews speaking of her bitter disappointment.
