Gee Whizz: Tortoise rescued from middle of the road

A TORTOISE which tried to cross a busy road in Dumfries and Galloway has been rescued by an animal charity.

The Scottish SPCA was called to help the exotic pet after a motorist spotted it crossing the B722 between Annan and Ecclefechan.

Now named Whizz, the tortoise is recovering from its adventurous ordeal at Dunragit Kennels, Stranraer.

Animal Rescue Officer Tracy Cannon said, “Whizz could easily have been hit by a car so it’s lucky that the motorist who spotted him was able to slow down and pull over.

“We think Whizz is a hermann’s tortoise and we’re sure someone somewhere will be missing their pet.

“Several stray tortoises have been rescued by us from various locations across the country over the last few days due to the warm weather.

“Their owners have been letting them out into the garden for some exercise and sun bathing and they have escaped under fences and through gates.

“It’s quite surprising how quickly a tortoise can move.

“Hopefully Whizz’s owner will come forward to claim their pet back soon.”

Anyone who recognises Whizz the tortoise is being asked to call the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
