A 19-year-old who died suddenly on a Shetland beach on Saturday has been named as American student Evan Padraig Dube.
Evan, from Plaistow, New Hampshire was taking part in the Shetland Islands Climate and Settlement Project, an ongoing archaeological research project. He was with a group of 10 students from the Bates College, Lewiston, Maine.
The group planned to have a BBQ and arrived at West Voe beach shortly after 9pm on Saturday night. Evan went into the water soon after arriving and appeared to collapse once coming ashore. Resuscitation was attempted by his friends who called emergency services.
Evan was airlifted to hospital but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
A classical studies student, Evan was a keen actor, building an extensive theatrical resume during his time at high school and continuing this into his first year at Bates in a production of “Bus Stop” last autumn.
In a statement, Bates Collegesaid: “Bates College has been shaken and deeply saddened to learn that first-year student Evan Dube died on Saturday night…
“At this time we have no other information about the incident to offer— simply that we have lost a member of our Bates community long before his time. Evan’s fellow students inScotlandare receiving grief counseling and will return toBostonon Tuesday.”
There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
