DRUNKEN youths who organise massive parties on social networking sites should spend the weekend in police cells, a councillor has demanded.
Ian Chisholm says the move will discourage the gatherings of up to 150 young people which are blighting a community in Fife.
Police have branded Lochgelly a “hotspot for anti-social behaviour on Friday and Saturday nights.”
The councillor will be asking police to take a tougher line with the problem.
Mr Chisholm said: “I’ll be asking officers to lock these kids up for the weekend, for their own safety and for the public’s safety.
“The kids focus on one area for a few weeks until there’s a police crackdown and then they move on somewhere else.”
Jail
Police have previously revealed the gatherings are organised on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
The first party began at Lochore Meadows three weeks ago before the youths moved to nearby Lochgelly after police cracked down.
Shopkeeper Muhammad Arif Ashfaq said: “I think they should be put in jail for the weekend.
“There’s 50 or 60 out there on Friday nights and it’s very bad for our business.
“People are scared to come to the shop, especially senior citizens.
“We have to call the police three or four times most weekends.
“Officers move the young peole on but they just come back.”
Proportionate
Chief Superintendent John Pow of Fife Constabulary said: “Police officers will take proportionate action whenever they find evidence of offences, and this ranges from community based responses to taking individuals to custody when necessary.”
