Turner Prize nomination for Scots artist

A SCOTS artist has been nominated for this year’s Turner Prize.

Luke Fowler graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) in 2000.

The Glaswegian is best known for his film portraits of counter culture figures who have become marginalised or maligned. He has been nominated for a solo exhibition at Edinburgh’s Inverleith House.

Moira Payne, Director of Art and Media at DJCAD, congratulated Luke, saying, “Even during his student days, Luke was exploring the subjects that still interest him, such as the collaging of historic or archival references with location, sound and photography.

“Luke reflects the spirit of Fine Art at DJCAD. We are delighted with Luke’s success, wish him all the best for the judging, and look forward to inviting him back to celebrate with us.”

Luke (34) has already won a number of awards, including the Donald Dewar Prize (2004), Derek Jarman Award (2008), Contemporary Art Society Annual Award (2010) and Paul Hamlyn Award (2010).

Susan Philipsz, another graduate of DJCAD, was the 2010 winner of the Turner Prize, widely regarded as the most prestigious, and often controversial, award for contemporary art.

The winner will be announced later this year.
