THE Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has launched a search for an Edinburgh College of Art student to become its official artist in residence.
The post runs from May to September and carries a £1,500 stipend. It offers the successful student the opportunity to use their artistic discipline to create original work for the promotion and celebration of the Tattoo and its 2012 production.
It is anticipated that work produced by the student will be displayed at an exhibition held later this year.
Last year Scottish landscape painter and ECA graduate Leo du Feu’s became the inaugural Tattoo artist in residence.
Robert Gillan, Associate Head of the School of Design at Edinburgh College of Art said: “This competition is a great opportunity for our students to present their ideas on an international stage. The Tattoo has a global audience and it is a privilege to inject the broad range of creative ability nurtured here at ECA into this already fabulous spectacle.”
Tattoo Chief Executive and Producer Brigadier David Allfrey MBE launched the search in front of 60 students and staff, challenging them to submit design concepts fit for Edinburgh’s world famous event.
One of the unique elements of the contest, designed to encourage students to think outside of the box, is the need for applications to be presented within or on a shoebox – kindly provided by Schuh.
Brigadier David Allfrey said: “This collaboration with the Edinburgh College of Art allows us to support the development of young and creative people in Scotland. The programme embraces the gamut of the artistic disciplines including painting, sculpture, drawing, graphic design, photography, illustration, jewellery and even fashion. We look forward to seeing the submissions from these talented students and awarding the prize.”
