Two charged with murder after East Lothian death

Two men have been charged with the murder of John Auld

TWO men have been charged with murder following the death of an East Lothian man.

John Auld, 59, died after being assaulted following a disturbance outside Kopa’s takeaway in the High Street, Tranent, at about 5pm on Sunday.

Two men, aged 30 and 36 years, have been charged with murder and will appear at Haddington Sheriff court later today.

Police say they are not currently looking for anyone else.

Superintendent Phil O’Kane said: “We believe the original disturbance at the take away is a hate crime as there are reports it has been aggravated by race.

“As such, we are investigating the possibility that Mr Auld’s death could be linked.

“We would ask any members of the community who were in the High Street in Tranent in the early evening between 4.30pm and 5.30pm yesterday, and who may have seen the original disturbance, or the subsequent assault on Mr Auld, to speak to police.

“Furthermore, we would ask any home or business owners in the area who have CCTV which covers this location, to contact police on 0131 311 3131.”
