Murderer who killed a man he thought was paedophile dies in prison

Richard Barnes died at HMP Glenochil

A MURDERER who knifed a mentally-ill man 50 times because he wrongly believed he was a paedophile has died in jail.

Richard Barnes was jailed for life on October 21, 2003 for the murder of Daniel Thomas.

He had carried out the attack with his brother Russell, who was also jailed after pleading guilty to his part in the killing.

Barnes died while serving a minimum 18-year sentence at HMP Glenochil in Alloa.

It is understood the 38-year-old died on Saturday.

A trial at the High Court in Edinburgh heard that Barnes and his brother stabbed 30-year-old Mr Thomas to death at his home in Galashiels, in the Borders.

Barnes had been freed early from a three year jail sentence for a serious assault when he killed Mr Thomas.
