Kitten abandoned on doorstep

Emma is now being cared for by the SSPCA

A TINY kitten was abandoned on a doorstep in Dalkeith.

The resident, of the town’s Woodburn Drive, opened his door to find the eleven-week-old female cat on Sunday afternoon.

The kitten, who has been named Emma, is now being cared for at The SSPCA’s Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre.

Animal Rescue Officer Emma Phillips said, “Emma was very frightened but is in good condition, suggesting she was looked after by her previous owner.

“Thankfully, she was left in a place where she would be found relatively quickly as it’s very cold and she wouldn’t have survived for long outside in this weather.

“Regardless of this, there is no excuse to abandon any animal.

“We are very keen to identify her owner and would ask anyone with information to get in touch as soon as possible.”

Abandoning an animal is an offence that carries stiff penalties including up to six months in prison and a £5,000 fine. Anyone found guilty of doing so can also expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

Anyone with information relating to this abandonment is being urged to contact our Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
