A BENEFITS cheat who swindled the taxpayer out of more than £17,000 has been ordered to pay the money back.
Elaine Meeks, 54, claimed £7,500 in housing benefits over nearly three years, despite being a part owner of her home in Dalgety Bay, Fife.
Meeks, who pleaded guilty at Dunfermline Sheriff Court in August, will also have to carry out 200 hours of community service.
Following the hearing, Fiona Cameron, District Procurator Fiscal for Dunfermline, said: “Elaine Meeks lied about her circumstances to claim housing benefit for over two and a half years. In committing these crimes, she obtained funds from the public purse to which she was not entitled, and from those who most needed it.
“This case should be a warning to those who think that targeting public funds is an easy option.”
