BARRA has been shortlisted as one of the world’s most stunning airport approaches in the world.
The tiny island transport hub is up against much larger destinations, such as including Gibraltar, Las Vegas, St Barts, London City, Hong Kong and Queenstown in the poll, run by a company specialising in private jets.
Those flying to the Hebridean island are treated to a unique experience as the airport boasts the only beach runway in the world.
The short-list will be whittled down to a top ten next month, and travellers will be able to vote for their favourite aerial view.
Michael Galbraith, Station Manager at Barra Airport said: “Barra is famed for its spectacular scenery and its unique beach landing strip, giving passengers a spectacular view of our beautiful island.
“Our beach surface actually gives passengers a much softer landing experience in comparison to tarmac which some visitors are pleasantly surprised by.
“When competing against the world’s airports, we are really happy to have made it through to this point in the competition. We may be a small airport, but we have a lot to offer and hope that visitors and locals to Barra will vote to push us into the top ten.”
The poll for the top ten favourite airport approaches for 2011 will be open until Friday, November 25.
