Sewage flows through school after torrential rain

Sanderson’s Wynd Primary School was swamped with sewage after drains blocked

SEWAGE poured through the doors of a primary school after flash floods caused nearby drains to overflow.

Staff at Sanderson’s Wynd Primary School in Tranent, East Lothian were faced with cleaning up the foul-smelling debris after the school flooded shortly after 1.30pm today (fri).

The area had been hit by a heavy deluge of rain and the drainage system was unable to cope.

Luckily pupils had already finished classes for the day.

Fire crews assisted the staff is cleaning up the mess, in the hope that children could return to lessons on Monday morning.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue said: “ We were called to a Primary School on Sanderson’s Wynd, Tranent at 1.32pm.

“There were reports of flood water and sewage entering the school and crews are assisting staff in clearing up the mess.”

A spokesman for East Lothian Council said: “Due to heavy rain there has been flooding at Sanderson’s Wynd Primary School in Tranent as drains couldn’t cope with the deluge.

“there is some sewage in the toilet areas due to drains backing up.

“The Fire Service have been helping clear the water and the Council will send a team to clean up the school. The school is expected to be open on Monday according to the head teacher.”
