A MAN fighting for his life following a racing crash may have removed his seatbelt.

It is understood that investigators are looking into the possibility that the man took his seatbelt off during the race, which took place at the “Crail Thrash” event in Fife.

Motorists are allowed to drive “suitably adapted vehicles” round the track on an old airfield site.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: “It’s thought the driver took his seatbelt off before the crash.”

The accident occurred at around 3.55pm on Sunday.

The 46-year-old man was driving a silver Renault Clio on Sunday afternoon when it left the track, catapulting him through the windscreen.

He suffered severe head injuries and was airlifted to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where he remains in a drug-induced coma.

Fife Police Inspector Stevenson, who is investigating the incident, said “We are keen to speak to any person who would have been at this event and may have seen the accident occurring.

“We are also keen to speak to those who may have been driving on the track prior to the accident occurring. I am aware that a number of persons had left he area prior to the emergency services arriving and would ask them to contact us on 0845 600 5702”.
