“Despicable” thieves rob woman on way to church

CALLOUS thieves robbed a partially-blind 80-year-old woman as she made her way to church.

In a

“despicable’ act the pensioner was thrown to the ground by two men, who made off with just 50.

The incident happened just before 9am, as the victim was on her way to the Sunday service at The Old Kirk in Edinburgh’s West Pilton area.

The woman, who was uninjured but shaken by the assault, stoically refused a lift home from the police station, preferring instead to walk.

Local councillor Cammy Day, who met with the woman, branded the muggers

“spineless.”

He said:

“I find it nothing less than disgraceful that an elderly woman can’t walk to church early on a Sunday morning without coming across a spineless pair of thugs like these two.

“The police have a good idea who committed this crime and she was trying to pick out these pictures of suspects yesterday but was having trouble making them out as she is partially sighted. “

He added:

“I know she hasn’t let this bother her and even after it happened she was adamant she was walking home from the police station. “

Detective Constable Sara Hamilton appealed for two witnesses who had come to the woman’s aid following the incident to come forward.

The first suspect is described as being in his early 20s and around 5ft 5. He was white, chubby and had shoulder-length red hair.

The second suspect is taller, at around 6ft and is of medium build.

He had a dark shaved head and a scar on his cheek.
