A 74-year-old Scots woman is teaching nofewer than ten fitness classes every week and vows
“as long as I can move, I will groove.”
Helen Flannigan, from Edinburgh, has been a fitness and dance instructor for more than 30 years.
She is teaching body attack, line dancing, spinning, aqua fitness and flexi-bar and has now added Zumba to the impressive list.
Mrs Flannigan said:
“People coming to my classes used to say to me,
“my mother used to come to your classes.” Now they say,
“my granny used to come to your classes.”
“There’s a lot of women and men out there who are in their 50s, 60s and 70s who are all participating in the classes, so I’m not special. I just enjoy what I’m doing. “
The fitness fanatic says that Zumba is the class were you can have the most fun.
She said:
“That’s one class where you can really let yourself go and enjoy yourself. I tell them if an old bird like me can do it, they can do it! “
As well as running the weekly fitness classes at Greens Health and Fitness and Craiglockhart Leisure Centre, the mother-of-one also visits three care homes every week to do
“chair exercises’ with residents.
She added:
“We have a lot of fun. I take a lot of props – balls and drumsticks – and do chair exercises to help their spine and mobility. “
