Man rescued from fire at converted flat

A firefighter indicates to the damaged cottage roof.

FIRE fighters tackled a blaze overnight as a fire ripped through a converted flat.

A 24-year-old man was rescued and given oxygen at the scene before an ambulance rushed him to hospital.

The fire broke out around midnight today (Tue) at Pilrig Cottages in Edinburgh, which is a row of cottages converted into flats.

It was being battled by crews for most of the night after spreading from the ground floor up two stories to the roof.

The row is made up of nine cottages which have been turned into 18 flats across two levels.

Another six neighbouring residents were evacuated as gas, electricity and building controllers were called out to assess the damage, with the roof being deemed “unsafe”.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue said: “We have been tackling a blaze over night at number six Pilrig Cottages.

“The fire took hold of the ground floor and spread up through the next floor and into the roof.

“A total of six people were evacuated as a safety precaution and one man was rescued by fire fighters and treated at the scene before going to hospital.”

And at around 5am, fire crews were called out to another blaze at the Tranmere Hotel in Tranent, East Lothian.

No one was hurt in the fire, which is believed to have started in the bar area.

Crews were still at the scene at 8.30am and were said to be “checking for hot spots”.
