A COWARDLY thief apologised to an elderly couple after threatening them with a knife in their own home and demanding cash.
The couple, who are both in their 70s, were in bed when the man – who is believed to be around 30-years-old – entered their room brandishing a knife.
The elderly man protested and the would-be robber apologised and fled the property in Dalkeith, Midlothian.
Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for information following the incident at around 1.30am today (Fri).
The man, who was wearing a blue T-shirt, is described as being 5ft 6ins tall with a stocky build and short dark hair.
A spokesman for the force said: “While the couple did not suffer any serious injury, they were left understandably shaken, and we are appealing for any information that can help us trace the suspect.
“In particular, there may have been delivery drivers or taxi drivers who were in the area at the time, who may have seen someone acting suspiciously, and we would urge them to contact police.
“Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect should also get in touch.”
Anyone with any information should contact the police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
