IF not for brave fire fighters they would have been dead parrots.
Three parrots were plucked from a burning building yesterday (Wed) after a fire broke out in a first-floor bedroom.
Fire crews were called to the blaze in Broxburn, West Lothian, at around 6.15pm and said the semi-detached house was “well alight” when they arrived.
Fire fighters wearing oxygen masks managed to find the parrots and were able to remove them.
The Scottish SPCA was also called to the scene as the birds appeared to be suffering from smoke inhalation.
They were taken to the charity’s centre in Balerno, Edinburgh, to be checked over.
But last night (Thur) a spokeswoman for the SSPCA said the parrots were “safe and well” and had been handed back to their owner.
It took the fire crews – deployed from Livingston, Broxburn and Bathgate – around five hours to extinguish the blaze, which caused “severe damage” to the bedroom and other parts of the first floor.
A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service said: “An investigation is under way into the cause of the fire but fortunately, no one was injured.”
The owners of the house declined to comment.
