Shopkeeper threatened by knife-thugs alerts police through panic alarm

A SHOPKEEPER was left shaken after being threatened by two thugs with kitchen knives.

The owner of S & J Stores, a newsagent in the Leith area of Edinburgh, was behind the till on Sunday at around 8am when two men entered the store demanding cash.

He hit the panic button immediately – a fixture linked up with the property’s alarm system – and backed away to the rear of the shop.

He was followed by one of the attackers, who continued to shout his demands for money, while the other – who was wearing a balaclava – remained beside the counter.

The men – both believed to be between 17 and 20 – eventually left the store empty handed, before making off towards Easter Road.

Police are now appealing for witnesses and describe the first man as being around 5ft 6ins tall with a slim build and short hair.

He had a dark coloured scarf around his face, while the man wearing the balaclava is believed to be between 5ft 8 and 10ins tall and was carrying a plain cream fabric shopping bag at the time.
