A BLAZE at a plastics factory sent smoke and flames hundreds of feet into the air and led to a warning to residents to shut all doors and windows.
The fire at Production Glassfibre in Mitchelston Industrial Estate, Kirkcaldy, was reported shortly before 4pm today (Wednesday).
Police said the fire appeared to have destroyed the entire building.
Last night, it emerged the firm is involved in the manufacture of diving boards for the London Olympics, as well as blades for wind turbines.
A spokesman said: “This is a fairly major fire.
“No-one was hurt but it was a big plastics factory and because of the content of smoke, police officers closed roads in the area.”
The spokesman said people living in the area were advised to avoid the area, stay indoors and close their doors and windows as a precaution.
A spokeswoman for Fife Fire and Rescue said: “At present, crews are working extremely hard to deal with this ongoing incident.”
The spokesman said seven fire engines went to the scene, backed by a turntable ladder and other support units. An officer specialising in hazardous materials was also sent to the scene.
