Giant robot set to entertain Christmas crowds

A Giant, snow-bot, created by two recent graduates of Edinburgh College of Art, arrived in the capitals’s St Andrew’s Square today (Fri) as part of the ‘Alternative Christmas Decorations’, a competition run by Edinburgh Sparkles.

The towering 3.9 metre high Snow-bot – called Mr Snow – created by artists, Thomas Payne, 23, and Matthew Swan, 23, was modelled on wind-up, tin robots popular in the 1950s and 1960s.

And while this creation is not  mobile, it will shoot snow-like-foam 10 metres into the air at sporadic intervals during the day from its stationary position at St Andrew’s Square.

As part of the same campaign, a string of shop windows have been adorned with images telling the famous, Hans Christian Andersen tale, The Snow Queen designed by another Edinburgh College of Art student.

Astrid Jaekel has created an illuminated re-telling of the Snow Queen using delicate paper cut-outs, which appear as a story trail in 18 windows throughout the city from Wednesday 1st December and illuminated from 3.30pm until 2am each day.

The three artists won a competition run by Destination Edinburgh Marketing Alliance to appear in the city centre as part of the ‘Alternative Christmas Decorations’ during the city’s Edinburgh Sparkles campaign promoting the festive holidays.
