NEWCASTLE United assistant coach Colin Calderwood has been named as the new manager of Hibs.
Chairman Rod Petrie unveiled his new signing at a 5.15pm press call at Easter Road and said the new man had enjoyed “a great success managing at all levels” and was confident he would help the Edinburgh club forward.
He said he Calderwood had a winning mentality both “on and off the field” and he expected him to “win more games and challenge at the top end of the table.”
Calderwood, sporting a green and white club tie, had previously been boss at Northampton Town and Nottingham Forest, leading both to promotion.
He takes over from previous manager and former club captain John Hughes who left after a series of poor results which saw fans boo the team.
Calderwood, 45, earned some 36 caps as a Scotland player until retiring from the international scene after Euro 2000 and as a player a year later after spells with Spurs, Swindon Town, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Notts County.
His career began at Mansfield town where he starred in 100 games as defender, going on to work under managers including Lou Macari, Glenn Hoddle and Ossie Ardiles.
Originally from Stranraer he said he wanted to set a “higher desire” for winning than currently on display at the Edinburgh club.
His backroom team is still subject of negotiation.
Calderwood arrives on a three year deal and said the chance to manage his own team again was behind his move from St James Park.
He said: “I have always wanted to be manager again and I am delighted to be given this opportunity at another huge club, Hibernian.
“I’m looking forward to working with the squad and can’t wait to get started as we prepare for Saturday’s game at Aberdeen.”
Hibs are currently eighth placed in the Scottish Premierleague, just a point ahead of the Pittodrie side, making it a huge first game in charge.
