POLICE had to draft in mountain rescue teams to help them retrieve the body of a man in his forties found on Arthur’s Seat today.
A member of the public called Lothian and Borders Police after the grim discovery at about 10pm on Sunday night but due to the location police were unable to reach the scene without specialist help.
It was the same night that hundreds of people climbed the hill to get a good view of the Edinburgh International Festival fireworks.
The man’s body was finally taken from the area – known as The Dry Dam – at around 2.30pm today.
Police are treating the death as unexplained until they can carry out the post-mortem, which is expected to take place tomorrow.
A team from Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue had to be drafted in to help officers reach the rocky area just below the summit of Arthur’s Seat.
The complex operation took most of the day, with climbers with ropes making their way round to the area where the body was found.
A police spokesman said: “Lothian and Borders Police are investigating following the discovery of a body at Arthur’s Seat.
“Due to the location of the body, officers are being assisted by the Tweed Valley Search and Recovery team.
“Enquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the death and to establish an identity.”
