A MAN had to be cut out of his car after crashing head-on into a disused railway bridge.

The 28-year-old was driving near Carlowrie Cottages in Kirkliston when he hit the stone wall of the bridge, trapping himself inside the vehicle.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue were alerted by a member of the public shortly before 2.25pm today (Tue), and used cutting equipment to free the man.

An ambulance arrived at the scene quickly and took him to Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline, but the extent of his injuries had not yet determined.

Carlowrie Farm Cottage was closed for two hours by police while the road was gritted, to clean up an oil spillage caused by the collision.

A spokesman from Lothian and Borders Police said: “A man crashed his car into a railway bridge in Kirkliston, and had to be extracted from the vehicle by firemen.

“No other vehicles were involved, and an ambulance crew arrived very quickly to take the man to Queen Margaret Hospital.

“The road was closed until around 4.30pm as it had to be gritted and made safe due to the aftermath of the crash.”
