A YOUNG woman was killed after being struck by two cars on the M8, as she walked along the carriageway near the Edinburgh bypass.

The 19-year-old pedestrian was heading east-bound on the carriageway close to Hermiston Gait retail park at around 11pm on Tuesday.

She was hit by a vehicle traveling east-bound, the force of which propelled her onto the other side of the road and into the path of a second car.

The motorway was closed overnight by police between junctions one and two and only reopened at 6am the following morning.

An ambulance crew attended the scene, but the woman was pronounced dead on their arrival.

A spokesman for Scottish Ambulance said: “We can confirm a female pedestrian was struck by two cars when she was walking with a friend east-bound along the M8 carriageway near the Edinburgh bypass.

“We got the call shortly after 11pm, but she was already dead when our crew arrived at the scene.

“She was struck by a car which threw her into another one, it is a tragic accident.”

Police are appealing for information from witnesses traveling between Claylands  and Hermiston Gait, or pedestrians crossing the over-bridge at Gogar Station Road between 10.15pm and 11pm.

A police spokesman said: “We are not treating this incident as a hit and run as we have spoken to both the drivers and they have co-operated fully.

“However, we are launching an investigation into the cause of the accident, and it is important we speak to anyone in the area at the time.”
