Pensioner fights off car jacker

A PLUCKY pensioner fought off an attempted car jacker after he tried to steal her motor in the middle of a busy street.

The 60-year-old woman was sitting in her blue Peugeot 207 when the man opened the driver’s door and tried to grab her keys just before 5pm on Tuesday.

But she struggled against the attacker, who threatened to hurt her unless she got out the car on Citadel Court in Edinburgh.

The quick witted woman screamed, attracting the attention of her sister who ran over to help chase the man off.

The suspect fled, leaving the victim suffering bruised arms but no serious injury.

Police are now looking for the suspect and asking for anyone who saw anything to come forward.

He was described as being white, 25 to 30 years old, and between 5ft 7ins and 5ft 8ins tall.

The suspect was slim with short dark hair shaved on the side and clean-shaven at the time of the incident.

He was wearing a white t-shirt and navy tracksuit bottoms at the time of the attack.

The victim wasn’t willing to speak about her ordeal, but a police spokesman said: “This appears to have been an opportunistic attempt to make off with a vehicle, until the victim halted the suspects efforts.

“While not seriously injured, the victim did suffer some bruising to her arms and was left understandably shaken as a result.

“We are eager to speak to anyone who was in the Citadel Court or Admiralty Street area and may have seen or heard anything suspicious.

“In particular we are keen to speak to a young female who was walking her dog in the vicinity of the incident and who also came to the assistance of the woman.

“Similarly, anyone who can assist us in identifying the male responsible should also contact police immediately.”

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers.
