Police appeal after woman robbed in broad daylight

By Cara Sulieman

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a woman was robbed in broad daylight.

The 51-year-old M.E and chronic arthritis sufferer was walking down Bonnington Grove in the Leith area of Edinburgh when a teenage boy approached her from behind at around 1.20pm.

He walked up and grabbed her purse before running off in the direction of Pitt Street on Sunday.

It comes just a day after two teenagers punched and robbed a man in a wheelchair in the Oxgangs area of the city on Saturday.

“Terrible experience”

Police are not treating the two as linked, but are appealing for witnesses to both crimes to come forward.

The teenager who robbed the 51-yea-old is described as a white boy aged around 14 or 15 years, 5ft 4ins tall with short spiked fair hair.

He was wearing a light grey and white stripped hoodie and light coloured trousers at the time of the crime.

A police spokesperson said: “Although she escaped uninjured, this has been a terrible experience for the woman to have been robbed in broad daylight.

“This comes just a day after two teenagers assaulted and robbed a man in a wheelchair in a completely separate incident in Oxgangs Road.

“It is despicable that vulnerable members of the community are being targeted for petty gain.

Lothian and Borders Police would like to reassure people that this will not be tolerated, and all crimes of this nature will be investigated robustly.”

Officers are still appealing for any information in connection to the two teenagers who mugged the wheelchair user on Saturday.

They were described as aged 16 to 17, with one around 6ft tall with blonde hair and the other standing at around 5ft 10ins with dark hair.

They punched and robbed their 44-year-old victim in Oxgangs Drive at 9.40am.

Anyone with information on either of the crimes is asked to contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers.
