A 61-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his wife.
Joseph Richardson, from Musselburgh, is alleged to have killed Janette Richardson, 57, at their East Lothian home on Friday.
Appearing from custody before Sheriff Peter Gillam at Haddington Sheriff Court yesterday Mr Richardson made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody pending a further appearance.
Procurator Fiscal Fiona Caldwell confirmed the accused would be expected to re-appear in court within seven to eight days.
Mr and Mrs Richardson had been married for 35 years, having wed at Restalrig Parish Church in Edinburgh in September 1974.
The couple had four children, Joanne, 33, Gavin, 30, Daniel, 28, and Laura, 21, and two young grand-daughters.
Flowers from the family paying tribute to the former nurse were still outside the couple’s home on Stoneybank Drive.
A statement released on their behalf by Lothian and Borders Police read: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragedy. Janette was a loving caring mum, nana, sister and aunt and it will take the whole family some time to come to terms with her death.
“We ask that we are left in peace to grieve at this very difficult time.”
