Desperate Housewives star Maria Cross to advertise potatoes

DESPERATE Housewives star Maria Cross has been signed up to bring a touch of glamour to the humble potato.

The 44-year-old – who plays uptight housewife Bree Hodge in the series – has agreed to do the spoof ads for Scottish company Albert Bartlett, who sell Roosters.

In the tongue in cheek commercial, a pushy agent tries to get Bree to promote to red tatties.

After initially being appalled at the idea, she eventually agrees.

“Great impact”

Costing a whopping £3 million, the three month long campaign is due to hit TV screens in the autumn, and is the first UK advertising deal for the redhead.

John Hicks, marketing manager at the Airdrie-based company, said: “This campaign will really appeal to the next generation of consumers.

“Most people will not expect to see Marcia in a potato commercial, which will make her impact even greater.

“She will definitely bring a much-needed touch of glamour to the fresh potato category.”

Younger audience

Barlett’s has grown from humble beginnings boiling beetroot to the UK’s leading grower and packer of root vegetables.

With a huge operation, the company grows one in 10 of the potatoes, carrots, onions and a third of the parsnips we eat.

And they’re hoping that their new marketing campaign will help them reach out to a younger audience, primarily housewives between 25 and 54 years old.
