A YOUNG man was airlifted to hospital following a freak accident on St Andrews Pier in Fife.
The man – a French national – fell from the pier at 1pm on Saturday afternoon suffering injuries to his head, back and limbs.
A Forth Coastguard spokesman confirmed that they had pulled the man from the water.
He said: “The man had been in the water for over an hour and was suffering from hypothermia.“He was conscious and had suffered some injuries and he may have broken his back.
“We handed him over to the military helicopter crew from 117 Prestwick, and he was taken to Ninewells hospital in Dundee.”
The cause of the incident has not yet been determined.
The historic Pier Walk is popular with students who attend the University of St Andrews chapel on Sundays.
