Irn Bru chairman steps down

By Cara Sulieman

THE GREAT grandson of the founder of Scotland’s national drink has announced he is stepping down from the company.

Robin Barr, 71, will retire as chairman of A.G. Barr, the makers of Irn Bru, at the AGM in May.

After almost half a century on the board, Barr will still stay involved with the company, taking on a non-executive role.

He will be replaced by Ronnie Hanna, 66, who will serve as a non-executive chairman.

The “right time”

Speaking last night, Robin said: “Now is the right time for me to step down – the business is in excellent shape with a strong and stable executive team.

“I have great confidence in handing over to Ronnie Hanna who will provide the leadership, experience and drive to maintain the positive momentum in the business despite the current difficult economic times.”

Ronnie has been on the board for five years in a non-executive role and is pleased to still have Robin’s help and advice on hand.

He said: “I would like to pay tribute to Robin who has overseen the substantial development of the business during his 31 years as Chairman.

“I am delighted Robin has agreed to remain on the Board.

“I look forward to taking up the role of non-executive Chairman of this iconic Scottish Company.

“I know I will be heading a strong and stable team with significant opportunities to continue to develop the business.”

Warburton joins ranks

The news was also announced that Jonathan Warburton would be joining the board as well, bringing years of experience with the Warburton bread company with him.

Another family-run company, it is hoped that he can help Barrs go from strength to strength.
