Cyclist Killed After Collision

By Alexander Lawrie

A CYCLIST killed after a horror collision was on his way home from visiting a sick friend.

Alan Finlayson, 40, was struck by a blue Transit van on the west-bound carriageway of the A92 around 5pm on Wednesday.

He had been visiting friends in Kirkcaldy during the day before he cycled home.

Paramedics rushed him to Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline but they were unable to save him from his injuries and he died on Thursday night.

Mr Finlayson had recently moved into a new flat in Inchcolm Drive, Dunfermline, six weeks ago.

He suffered serious head injuries in 2005 after being attacked in Kirkcaldy High Street by a complete stranger.

Mr Finlayson spent over two months in hospital after doctors inserted steel plates in his skull and jaw.

The keen cyclist was just weeks away from receiving compensation because of the attack.

A friend, who didn’t want to be named, said: “I can’t quite believe this has happened to my mate. He’s had such a bad time of it recently and was just getting his life together.

“Alan was on his way back from visiting a sick friend in Kirkcaldy when he was hit. He was a really good friend to me and the type of guy who would do anything for you.”

Mr Finlayson is thought to be divorced with two children.

The friend added: “Alan was just a couple of months away from getting a payout because of him being attacked a couple of years ago. It’s just a shame he didn’t get to see the money because after what he went through he deserved every penny.”

A spokesman for Fife Police said: “Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this accident and would again appeal for any witnesses to come forward who may have seen the cyclist or the van that night.”
