“I feel younger than ever after a drop of Buckfast”: Tartan Army members give German grandad his first taste of Scotland’s most beloved wine

TARTAN Army members have hilariously given an elderly German football fan his first ever taste of Buckfast wine.

Blair McNally was in Germany for to support the national side at the Euros when he and his pals ran into an elderly German man, Ludger Wessel, in a pub on Saturday.

Taking the chance to get their new mate integrated with Scottish culture, the boys urged the grandfather to try a dose of the hearty Buckfast tonic wine – which left the old man blown away.

Video footage shows Ludger, dressed in a tartan cowboy hat in support of the visiting side, inspecting the bottle of wine as the fans around him encourage him with shouts of: “Go on the big man.”

The man said it left him feeling younger than ever.
The man said it left him feeling younger than ever.

Ludger, hesitant at first, takes a large sip of the sweet tonic while Blair and friends laugh and encourage him, watching on with glee.

Ludger, seemingly taken aback by the taste of the wine, grimaces after first tasting the beverage.

Soldiering on through the odd taste though, he swallows the gulp down, throwing his head back dramatically as he does.

Blair and the rest of the Tartan Army members surrounding Ludger cheer him on in excitement as he finishes his wine tasting.

Blair can be heard exclaiming, “You’re one of us now” proudly as he watches Ludger enjoy his first taste of tonic.

The footage of Ludger’s impromptu wine tasting was shared to social media on Saturday with the caption: “We gave a German grandad a drink of Buckfast.

“This was his reaction.”

The video of Ludger trying Scotland’s favourite wine has received over 4,400 likes and more than 50 comments from social media users.

Ludger himself replied and said: “I feel younger than ever after a drop of Buckfast.”

Another user wrote: “Scots are doing us (Welsh Celtic cousins) proud. Wish we were there to party with you.”

A third joked: “Ask him where he got that hat?  I lost mine.”

Another commented: “It’s very much an acquired taste.”

A fifth offered: “He looked like he was being forced to drink hemlock. Only a Scot would say ‘Yer one of us now’ at the end.”

Whilst heavily associated with Scotland and a staple of Scottish culture, Buckfast Tonic Wine was originally made by monks at Buckfast Abbey in Devon, England
